Carpani, Giuseppe Enrico S. J.
- Rome: Antonio de’ Rossi, 1737
The play is based on an episode of the life of Adonias (1 King 2, 12-25), a son of king David. After his half-brother Solomon was proclaimed king, Adonias, after trying to usurp the kingdom and subsequently fleeing, received pardon from Solomon. Nevertheless, Adonias afterwards tried to marry David's last woman, Abishag. Since this corresponded to a second attempt to gain the throne, Solomon denied his authorization for such a marriage and sentenced Adonias to death.
