Neo-Latin and the Newcomers: Catholic Inculturation(s)

Job advertisement (PreDoc)

For the sub-project Neo-Latin and the Newcomers: Catholic Inculturation(s) led by Patryk Ryczkowski, we are seeking for a PreDoc collaborator. Looking particularly into Eastern Catholicism and Catholic monastic communities, this sub-project investigates what was the role of Latinity in the processes of inclusion into Catholic culture. It is focused on the Latin language and literature explored by communities emerging and re-orientating themselves in the Church to adopt Catholic discourse and, conversely, to mark their specific profile.

What the candidate should offer:

  • Master’s degree in Classics or in a relevant subject specialising in the early modern period
  • interest in writing a PhD thesis in Neo-Latin studies connected to the sub-project’s research questions
  • some experience in the field of Neo-Latin
  • readiness to work in an international research team
  • excellent knowledge of Latin

What we offer:

  • inclusion in a worldwide leading centre of Neo-Latin research
  • pursuing PhD and possibility of developing a career in the thriving field of Neo-Latin and early modern studies under the supervision and encouragement of experienced researchers
  • possibility to benefit from the university’s training programmes
  • flexible working conditions and family-friendly working environment
  • additional benefits for the employees like subsidies for public transport or lunch

The position is supposed to start as soon as possible after October 1, 2026; it will last for three years and can then be converted into a PostDoc position until the end of the first funding period (December 31, 2029). The employee will be based in Innsbruck. The working hours for a Pre-Doc are 30 hours per week; payment is based on the salary rates of the FWF which funds the SRA (i.e., € 2.832,10 gross per month, 30 hours per week). No teaching duties are involved, but it will be possible for the post holder to teach if they wish so.

We are looking forward to your application which should consist of (1) a letter of motivation (max. 2 pages), (2) an academic CV, and (3) a writing sample. The application should be sent to Matthias Grafenauer, the SRA’s project manager (matthias.grafenauer@uibk.ac.at), who is also available for any general questions; alternatively, you can consult the sub-project’s PI, Patryk Ryczkowski (patryk.ryczkowski@uibk.ac.at). The closing date is August 2, 2026. The interviews will be held online during the first and second week of September 2026.
