The SRA team recently met with Adam Jatowt and Joseph Wang-Kathrein from the Forschungszentrum Digital Humanities for a productive exchange on current digital workflows and infrastructure.

During the meeting, the SRA’s digital committee introduced the Neo-Latin in the Modern World Semantic MediaWiki, discussing its underlying technical architecture and the implementation of new tools to query, extract, and reuse structured data. Following this exchange, a formal presentation of the SRA digital platform has been scheduled as part of the Forschungszentrum Digital Humanities lecture series in the coming months.

William Barton and Lev Shadrin presented their digital edition of Karl Benedikt Hase’s diaries, composed in Ancient Greek, which forms the core of our related project LAGOOS. Lev Shadrin also examined Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) technologies and their integration into broader digital humanities pipelines, evaluating the respective strengths and limitations of specialized HTR models versus general-purpose Large Language Models (LLMs).

The overarching discussion centered on critical challenges in the field: long-term data preservation, interoperability and reusability, the sustainability of digital humanities infrastructures, and the responsible integration of AI tools into rigorous philological and historical scholarship.

We thank Adam and Joseph for their valuable insights and look forward to continued collaboration and knowledge exchange with the Forschungszentrum Digital Humanities.
