On September 24 and 25, the NeoLatina conference was held in Innsbruck. This conference series, held annually in turn by Universities of Würzburg, Freiburg i.Br. and Innsbruck is dedicated to Neo-Latin authors and topics. This year, the conference was held in cooperation with the SRA “Neo-Latin in the Modern World” and the Centre for the History of Science in Graz.

The focus of the event was the self-representation, the self-fashioning of Neo-Latin authors, and especially the innovative use of old and new authorities, to inscribe themselves into the European republic of letters. A special interest lay in the strategies of self-presentation employed by marginalised groups and individuals – female authors, members of religious minorities or learned people writing at the periphery.

The contributions spanned a wide variety of topics and forms: epic poetry, philosophical treatises, translations, emblem books, peri- and epitexts, theological and scientific writing, self-bibliography, university texts, bilingual poems, orations, letters and more.

Two exciting and stimulating days resulted in a multi-layered discussion of Neo-Latin author’s self-fashioning, which will be continued in writing.
