Our Special Research Area is divided in eight sub-projects (SPs) of which each has a principal investigator and researchers.
SP 1 : Coordination Project

The Coordination Project is the heart of the SFB. It has to fulfill different functions: the general administration, the fundamental data management, and serving as window to the outside world.


SP 2 : Early Modern Classics – New Ancient Greek and Neo-Latin in the World

The sub-project „Viva vox“ is dedicated to a comprehensive description and interpretation of the oral use of Neo-Latin, using the methods of Classical Philology as well as those of modern conversational lingustics to that end.


SP 4 : Latin of Queens, Abbesses, Scientists – Women’s Voices in Neo-Latin

This subproject investigates new issues within the history of female Neo-Latin and neglected Neo-Latin women writers.
SP 5 : Neo-Latin Translations – Bilingual Books for Early Modern Readers

A comprehensive study on multilingual editions published in the Early Modern Period.


SP 6 : Neo-Latin and the Newcomers – Catholic Inculturation(s)

Looking particularly into Eastern Catholicism and Catholic monastic communities, this sub-project investigates what was the role of Latinity in the processes of inclusion into Catholic culture.
SP 7 : Kanones of Neo-Latin Texts

The aim of this sub-project is to clarify which Neo-Latin texts were attributed greater importance through canon-building processes, like editions, inclusion in curricula, or citations.
